GAME CARDS

know opportunityAny entrepreneurial venture requires a certain level of vision and foresight for potential trends, areas of opportunity for growth and expansion, and untapped target markets. Know Opportunity cards are meant to reiterate to students that developing an idea and thoughtfully pursuing it will prove beneficial in the long run.

what could go wrongMurphy’s Law states that whatever can go wrong, will. While not meant to be pessimistic or negative, the What Could Go Wrong card is meant to teach students that detailed planning is crucial to business success, but even with the best of planning, things can and will go wrong. And it’s up to you to overcome those obstacles.

too cool to pass upThe early days of starting and running a start-up can be extremely taxing – mentally, emotionally, financially. All the focus is on cutting costs and increasing output, in addition to all business functions. Sometimes, to keep one’s sanity, it’s necessary to invest in something for yourself – new clothing for meetings, office furniture, etc.

foreign connectionPart of the Know Opportunity concept is to teach students to become more adept at understanding global commerce. The Foreign Connection card is meant to show students that investing in international markets (through partnerships, manufacturing or expansion) can be a viable option, but it doesn’t come without risk.

let's make a dealBeing able to see an opportunity – even in the midst of small business stresses and problems – can ultimately be rewarding. But just because an opportunity looks promising doesn’t mean it will deliver. Let’s Make A Deal teaches students to recognize when investing money is a good idea, and when it’s just a gamble.

Pgrowing painsart of the entrepreneurial dream includes growing a business to large, profitable proportions, expanding brand awareness and ultimately becoming a household name. What many people fail to realize, though, is growth is expensive. The Growing Pains cards remind you that to make money, you must first spend (wisely, of course).

If you hold a PARTNER PAUSE token, you may ask another player to share the expense of a LET’S MAKE A DEAL card. You can split the  investment and the payoff 50/50 if your deal comes through. If another player holds a PARTNER PAUSE token, that player can ask to be included in a LET’S MAKE A DEAL – you must accept this partnership.

Again, you split the investment 50/50 along with the pay-off if the deal comes through. If another player has any of the INNOVATION CARDS you need to collect all 3, you may offer to partner on your INNOVATION. This means you will split the $1 Million investment at the finish line. You may only use the PARTNER PAUSE token one time.

Once you have made a partnership, record it on your INCOME STATEMENT and return the token to the TOKEN TRAY.

The object of the game is to finish with the most “profit”

Each player must randomly select a PROFILE. Draw one from the PROFILE CARDS, face down so you cannot see whhich profile card you are choosing. You will find your PAYDAY and GLOBAL PAYDAY..

You will collect your PAYDAY amount each time you pass a PAYDAY on the board. Once you land on the GLOBE, you will switch to collecting your GLOBAL PAYDAY, also each time you pass a PAYDAY on the board. Each player gets an INCOME STATEMENT ledger sheet to keep track of earnings and expenses.

Nearly every move on the board results in some kind of financial reward or loss, so be sure to keep track. On following information: name of your business, foreign country connection, starting pay, global payday and your INITIAL INVESTMENT. Your INITIAL INVESTMENT is the start-up capital you have to begin the game. Each player begins in the START block and rolls two die.

Use the INITIAL INVESTMENT key to determine how much start-up capital you will get. Make sure to record the amount on your INCOME STATEMENT.

INITIAL INVESTMENT KEY

  • Roll 2: Venture capital of $15,000
  • Roll 6: Personal savings of $2,500
  • Roll 8: Family gift of $5,000.
  • Roll 10: Angel investment of $10,000

There are two sides to the board: the start-up side (A) and the global side (B). Your expenses and rewards start off small until you go global. Then your rewards and risks increase.

You may now begin the game using one die*. Follow the prompts for each space you land in. (*For classroom play or if there is limited time, the game may be played with 2 dice throughout). When you land on a space, you must draw the card that matches the symbol on the space.

  • KNOW OPPORTUNITY: Land on this space and draw the card to earn money and support from family & friends.
  • PAYDAY: Land on or pass this space to collect a payday. Be sure to record it on your INCOME STATEMENT.
  • TOO COOL TO PASS UP: Land on this space to nd out how little expenses can add up.
  • WHAT COULD GO WRONG: Land on this space and discover all of the little problems that can add up to big expenses.

  • PITCH SESSION: Land on this space and feel the pressure as you have 15 seconds (use the timer) to tell the other players about your product. After you have given your PITCH, the player to your LEFT rolls one die, multiply that number by $1,000 to determine how much your pitch impressed the investors. Be sure to record the amount For example: If the player to your LEFT rolls a 2, you received $2,000 for your pitch. Be sure to record it on your INCOME STATEMENT.
  • SMART BUSINESS OWNER: There are 4 types of SMART BUSINESS OWNER cards. As you draw the other cards throughout the game, you will find prompts that allow you to use a SMART BUSINESS OWNER card against another player. You  may play these cards immediately or wait for the right opportunity.

    • BUSINESS COACH CARD
    • MARKETING CARD
    • ATTORNEY CARD

Once You Enter the Globe, Your Business Has Gone Global!

Once you land on the GLOBE, you must STOP, no matter what number you rolled. You now collect your first GLOBAL PAYDAY. Record it on your INCOME STATEMENT and wait here until your next turn. This will be your new PAYDAY for the rest of the game. Follow the prompts for each space you land in. Don’t forget, when you land on a space, you must draw the card that matches the symbol on the space.

GLOBAL PAYDAY: Land on or pass this space to collect a payday. Be sure to record it on your INCOME STATEMENT.

GROWING PAINS: Land on this space and find out why growing your business can be painfully expensive.

LET’S MAKE A DEAL: Land on or pass this space and find out whether or not you’re a risk taker. These deals will cost you up front but could have big pay-offs in the future.* (*Hold onto this card until the end of the game.)

PITCH SESSION: Land on this space and feel the pressure as you have 15 seconds (use the timer) to tell the other players about your product. But this time, the pay-off is bigger. After you have given your PITCH, the player to your LEFT rolls one die, multiply that number by $10,000 to determine how much your pitch impressed the investors. For example: If the player to your LEFT rolls a 2, you received $20,000 for your pitch. Be sure to record it on your INCOME STATEMENT.

FOREIGN INVESTMENT: Land on this space and determine any amount, up to $100,000 to invest. Roll a 4 or higher, your investment  pays off. Roll a 3 or lower, lose your investment. If your investment paid off – you may now record the invested amount in addition to your regular global payday on your INCOME STATEMENT. If your investment did not pay off – record it as a loss on your INCOME STATEMENT.

PARTNER PAUSE: Land on this space and decide whether or not you want to partner on your next business venture.

How to Win the Game

After all of the players have crossed the finish line, you will tally your INCOME STATEMENT.

If you have collected all 3 of the  INNOVATION cards, you may add an additional $1Million to your INCOME STATEMENT.

If you partnered to collect all 3 INNOVATION cards, you may divide the $1Million 50/50 between you and your partner and record it on your INCOME STATEMENT. If you have a LET’S MAKE A DEAL card, you will now risk it all on one number. Using the numbers in the CARD TRAY insert image you will choose a number 1 through 6, and place your LET’S MAKE A DEAL card on the corresponding number in the tray. Then, roll 1 die.

If you roll the same number as the corresponding number where you placed your card, your risk has paid off and you can add the deal pay-off to your INCOME STATEMENT. If you partnered on the LET’S MAKE A DEAL, your partner If your die roll does not match the  corresponding number where you placed your card, then your risk has not paid off and your deal is over. If you have more than 1 LET’S MAKE A DEAL card, repeat the same process as before, placing your card  on a corresponding number in the CARD TRAY and rolling 1 die to see if your deal paid off.

Each player tallies their INCOME STATEMENT. The player with the largest profit at the end of  the game is the winner.
