Any entrepreneurial venture requires a certain level of vision and foresight for potential trends, areas of opportunity for growth and expansion, and untapped target markets. Know Opportunity cards are meant to reiterate to students that developing an idea and thoughtfully pursuing it will prove beneficial in the long run.
Murphy’s Law states that whatever can go wrong, will. While not meant to be pessimistic or negative, the What Could Go Wrong card is meant to teach students that detailed planning is crucial to business success, but even with the best of planning, things can and will go wrong. And it’s up to you to overcome those obstacles.
The early days of starting and running a start-up can be extremely taxing – mentally, emotionally, financially. All the focus is on cutting costs and increasing output, in addition to all business functions. Sometimes, to keep one’s sanity, it’s necessary to invest in something for yourself – new clothing for meetings, office furniture, etc.
Part of the Know Opportunity concept is to teach students to become more adept at understanding global commerce. The Foreign Connection card is meant to show students that investing in international markets (through partnerships, manufacturing or expansion) can be a viable option, but it doesn’t come without risk.
Being able to see an opportunity – even in the midst of small business stresses and problems – can ultimately be rewarding. But just because an opportunity looks promising doesn’t mean it will deliver. Let’s Make A Deal teaches students to recognize when investing money is a good idea, and when it’s just a gamble.
Part of the entrepreneurial dream includes growing a business to large, profitable proportions, expanding brand awareness and ultimately becoming a household name. What many people fail to realize, though, is growth is expensive. The Growing Pains cards remind you that to make money, you must first spend (wisely, of course).
You must collect all 3 of the INNOVATION cards but if you do, your start-up will receive $1 Million at the finish line to support your newest innovation.
There are 4 types of SMART BUSINESS OWNER cards. As you draw the other cards throughout the game, you will find prompts that allow you to use a SMART BUSINESS OWNER card against another player. You may play these cards immediately or wait for the right opportunity.

Land on this space and decide whether or not you want to partner on your next business venture.
If you hold a PARTNER PAUSE token, you may ask another player to share the expense of a LET’S MAKE A DEAL card. You can split the investment and the payoff 50/50 if your deal comes through. If another player holds a PARTNER PAUSE token, that player can ask to be included in a LET’S MAKE A DEAL – you must accept this partnership.
Again, you split the investment 50/50 along with the pay-off if the deal comes through. If another player has any of the INNOVATION CARDS you need to collect all 3, you may offer to partner on your INNOVATION. This means you will split the $1 Million investment at the finish line. You may only use the PARTNER PAUSE token one time.
Once you have made a partnership, record it on your INCOME STATEMENT and return the token to the TOKEN TRAY.

PITCH SESSION: Land on this space and feel the pressure as you have 15 seconds (use the timer) to tell the other players about your product. But this time, the pay-off is bigger. After you have given your PITCH, the player to your LEFT rolls one die, multiply that number by $10,000 to determine how much your pitch impressed the investors. PARTNER PAUSE: Land on this space and decide whether or not you want to partner on your next business venture.
You may only use the PARTNER PAUSE token one time.
Once you have made a partnership, record it on your INCOME STATEMENT and return the token to the TOKEN TRAY.
How to Win the Game
After all of the players have crossed the finish line, you will tally your INCOME STATEMENT.
If you have collected all 3 of the INNOVATION cards, you may add an additional $1Million to your INCOME STATEMENT.
If you partnered to collect all 3 INNOVATION cards, you may divide the $1Million 50/50 between you and your partner and record it on your INCOME STATEMENT. If you have a LET’S MAKE A DEAL card, you will now risk it all on one number. Using the numbers in the CARD TRAY insert image you will choose a number 1 through 6, and place your LET’S MAKE A DEAL card on the corresponding number in the tray. Then, roll 1 die.
If you roll the same number as the corresponding number where you placed your card, your risk has paid off and you can add the deal pay-off to your INCOME STATEMENT. If you partnered on the LET’S MAKE A DEAL, your partner If your die roll does not match the corresponding number where you placed your card, then your risk has not paid off and your deal is over. If you have more than 1 LET’S MAKE A DEAL card, repeat the same process as before, placing your card on a corresponding number in the CARD TRAY and rolling 1 die to see if your deal paid off.
Each player tallies their INCOME STATEMENT. The player with the largest profit at the end of the game is the winner.
